Tools improve over time. New features, bug fixes, better patterns. Updating regularly means you're always working with the best version available.
Every tool you use gets updated by its creators. New capabilities, bug fixes, performance improvements. If you never update, you're stuck with the version from when you first installed it, including all its known problems.
Check for updates at the start of each work week. Most tools have an update command or will notify you when a new version is available. Read what changed before updating, especially for tools that affect your workflow significantly.
Weekly, or whenever something behaves unexpectedly. 'This used to work differently' might mean the tool was updated, or it might mean there's a bug. Updating resolves the first case.
